"Relational Repression and Urban Popular Protest in China"
During her fellowship at IAS-Nantes, Yanhua Deng aims to explore relational repression (using social ties to demobilize protesters) and urban popular protest in China.
She relies on both qualitative and quantitative methods to conduct this research. First, she will use a national survey data to test the hypothesis that having strong ties to people who are working in the government departments or public institutions may constrain one’s protest participation. Second, she has collected abundant data, through interviews and media reports, on more than 30 incidents of urban demolition during which relational repression was used.
The research conducted by Yanhua Deng may contribute to the understanding of China in the following ways. First, this project demonstrates that social networks, especially strong ties, often have demobilizing effect in authoritarian China as well as having strength of protest mobilization. Second, the project will explore continuities and changes of the “guilt-by-association” as an institution in China. Finally, this project will explore how location matters for practice and effectiveness of relational repression.
