Biography

Shailaja Chandra was an IAS officer (Indian Administrative Service) (1966 batch) before retirement. Shailaja Chandra was Secretary in the Department of Indian Medicine MOHFW (1999-2002) and before that had worked in the Health sector for over 10 years continuously.
As Chief Secretary, she was actively associated with a government-citizen partnership Bhagidari which won the United Nations Public Service Award for improving transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in the Public Service Category. She received the International Clean Cities Award on behalf of the Government of Delhi for introduction of the largest fleet of CNG run (environment friendly) buses in the world.
On retirement Shailaja became Chairman of the Public Grievances Commission, and Appellate authority under the Delhi Right to Information Act 2001where she came into direct contact with NGO's and the public and the media -an assignment that spurted a desire to write about the realities that outweigh political and bureaucratic claims.
From 2006 onwards until lately Shailaja was appointed and functioned as the first Executive Director of the National Population Stabilisation Fund a new organisation set up by set up by Government of India. A number of articles on population and gender related issues were written then for which Shailaja was given a special award for advocacy on population issues and gender sensitivity by Ladli-UNFPA.

From 2009 onwards Shailaja Chandra has been engaged in programmes and activities that focus on governance,school and higher education,health, population and gender. She is the Chairman of various Boards and Committees run by institutions and organisations functioning in these areas, both in the public and private sector.
