On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Nantes Institute for Advanced Study hosted an event as part of the 4th Franco-Australian Opening Ceremony of the CDMO - Centre for Maritime and Oceanic Law. The event was centered around the theme "Ocean, Emotions, and Planetary Boundaries" and was organized in partnership with IUML_UN e-SEA and the Institute.

The Australian philosopher and academic Glenn Albrecht sponsored the event. He is known for introducing the concept of "solastalgia", which refers to the feeling of sadness and loss associated with the degradation of the local environment. His work explores the links between human emotions and environmental changes, focusing on the psychological impacts of climate change and the destruction of natural landscapes.

The Institute organized a key moment of the program

The event opened with an artistic performance on the emotions of the Earth, choreographed by Évelyne Jolivet and Mélodie Burgaud, which captured the audience's attention.

This was followed by a panel discussion featuring Glenn Albrecht, Évelyne Jolivet, Mélodie Burgaud, as well as Dr. Guy Dupuis and PhD candidate Arnaud Sapin. They discussed emotions as well as environmental and legal issues. The discussions allowed for a reflection on the role of human emotions in scientific and legal debates surrounding the Ocean and climate change.

This event, while focused on complex issues, marked a new step in the ongoing reflection on major contemporary challenges.
